With spring around the corner, the time to start the spring cleaning process is now. If you want to prevent mold and water damage in your house, you should take care of your gutters and downspouts. After all, snowfall may have forced debris, trash, and other gunk to get trapped in there, preventing their proper functioning. For a few tips on how to maintain your gutters, continue reading!

How to Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts

You'll Need

  • A sunny weekend
  • Sunblock
  • A hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Gloves
  • A reliable ladder
  • A scooper
  • Trash bags
  • A hose
  • A plumber's snake

Remain Safe

If you care about your safety, you should wear protective gear when you're working outside. Furthermore, you should ensure that the ladder is stable before climbing on it.

Take your scooper and remove the trash that you find in the gutters (debris, leaves, dust, and random garbage). Be sure to keep the bags handy so you can put the trash in them and throw them out.

Wash Them

If there's some filth that can't be scooped out, flush it out with the hose. Use the scooper once again to scrub it off. At the same time, notice if the water is traveling through the downspout properly.

Unclog Them

If your downspout isn't bringing the water down as expected, you'll have to unclog it. To that end, use the plumber's snake to push or pull the barrier out of the way. Flush more water down to see if you've unclogged the downspout effectively.
