As we are moving smoothly through the month of November, and we’ve already written about preparing your home for fall, the natural next step is to ensure you and your home are protected from snow and ice in the winter months that are to come. Here at Zott Construction DKI in Stormville, it is our goal that your family is as protected and prepared as possible, and for this reason we are offering the following winter weather tips.

Ice Dams occur mainly where there is ice buildup at the bottom of your roof slope and snow above it. If some of the snow melts or becomes slush and then is covered again by snow, there is now a watery mess just under the surface of the snow, and on top of your roof. This can cause serious damage, if the water is there for too long it may very well begin to leak into your home. There are several ways to avoid ice dams.

Snow Buildup is something you’ll want to look out for. Not only can avoiding snow buildup on the roof help you to prevent/easily indicate ice dams, it is also good to protect your roof from the heavy substance and possible avalanche like disasters.

Icicles being present, could be an indication of an ice dam, or a more simple problem, clogged gutters. Either way, icicles do indicate a drainage problem of some sort and should be checked out immediately. Be sure to safely remove the icicles before working near the affected area.

Freezing Pipes are extremely inconvenient and can cause extensive damage. While you will not be able to avoid the possibility with 100% accuracy, there are certainly a few things you can do to help prevent freezing pipes.
- insulate pipes that are exposed to outdoor temperatures, whether they are in the attic, basement, or another area of the property
- use insulated covers on the faucets outside of the home
- the faucets inside of the home can be warmed by keeping cabinet doors and/or closets open at night-this will help the warm inside air to infiltrate those areas more easily

Remember, that even after all of these preparations it is still possible to suffer property damage due to the winter elements. If you discover a problem too big for you to fix, remember Zott Construction DKI for property restoration in Stormville.
