You may have read our post on protecting your home's foundation from the rain, but what about pipes bursting in winter? This is the perfect time to learn these tips to take care of your pipes so that they don't give you a nasty surprise when the cold season arrives.

Warmth is the Key

The key is to provide a warm ambience for those pipes in vulnerable places, but how exactly do you do that? These bits of adivce should be helpful in clarifying that.
  1. Provided that your kitchen is a warm place, open the cabinet doors under the sink to allow the room air to flow in.
  2. Place a lamp with lightbulb of 60 watts or higher near the problematic pipes and walls. Make sure there are no flammable materials and the like near it, however.
  3. Close and seal every foundation vents near water pipes using rigid foam insulation. Use said insulation for walls and ends of the floor joists as well.
  4. If your crawl access is inside your house, set a fan near the opening to blow the warm air from your home into the foundation. This is not adviced if the access is somewhere else.
  5. Insulate your exterior walls. Use caulking to seal around doors, windows, faucets and other spots where cold air might enter.
