Check Your Major Home Systems

Checking your major home systems every summer will prevent major home disasters. The electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling systems in your home are where major problems can start. Your home will be safer and so will your loved ones.

Plumbing and Water

Keep your water temperature at 120 degrees Fahrenheit and no higher to prevent scalding and burns. Check well waters with a home kit or send it to a commercial lab for analysis. Read your water heater's safety instructions and insect it accordingly.

Check ground fault interrupters in your house. GFIs should be installed wherever there is water and electricity being used. Places like the bathroom and kitchen should have GFIs. May close attention to electrical appliance safety when doing your inspection. Get rid of or have cords repaired on any electrical devices with frayed or exposed codes. Unwind cords to prevent the coil wires from overheating. Remove any cords from areas such as walkways where someone may trip.

Heating and Cooling

Check your furnace during summer. Months of going unused can spell "danger" come fall. If you notice any failure to light, strange smells or sounds. Call a professional. Clean and replace heating and cooling system filters every season. Thoroughly clean your dryer vent to prevent a house fire. And change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors even if they are working. You can use those batteries for non-critical devices. Summer time is the fun time. Checking off your summer safety checklist is fast and easy. You'll be back at the beach in no time. Just knowing your summer safety checklist is complete, you'll be able to enjoy the sun and sand much more.
