With the weather we’ve been living through, having warm water to shower with is not something to be taken for granted. This is when our trusty water heaters come in, and we should appreciate them!

If you want your heater to keep giving you the warmth you need in an efficient manner and without any hazards, you need to give it proper maintenance. If you want to know how you can achieve that, Zott Construction DKI in Stormville is here to help you out.

How to Check Your Water Heater

1. First, make sure to turn the water heater off and wait a while for it to cool down so you don’t burn yourself.

2. Make sure that the space around the water heater is clean and free of any mess or flammable substances. Also, remove any obstructions from the heater’s ventilation.

3. Next, check the burner to see the condition it is in. Clean any soot, debris and dust buildup in there thoroughly so the heater can work properly.

4. Then, check each of the pipes and make sure that they are firmly attached, and that there aren’t any leaks.

5. Now, check the temperature and pressure valve by lifting the lever. If it snaps back and you hear a gurgling sound, that means it’s working. If not, replace it.

6. You should also drain the tank to avoid calcium buildup. Do this by placing a bucket under the drain pipe and letting a few gallons of water out of the tank.

7. If you’d like to improve your heater’s efficiency, you can wrap it in a fitted fiberglass insulation blanket. Just make sure to allow ventilation where it’s needed.

8. If you find that something isn’t quite right during your inspection, call a professional so they can check and fix your water heater before anything disastrous happens.
