Days have been rainy around here lately. An important step in making sure the water stays outside your property is waterproofing the roof. If you haven’t done this during this wet season, and would like to keep dry while in your home, Zott Construction DKI in Stormville will tell you how to do it in this post.

How to Waterproof the Roof

1. Start by getting the tools: mortar, trowel, primer, sealant, roller, dustpan, broom, plastic bags, and protection for yourself (e.g. sunblock and the right clothing).
2. Then, pick a nice, sunny day to fulfill this task. Keep in mind that the sealant needs to dry thoroughly for about 24 hours, so this is very important.
3. Clean the roof with your broom: get all the dirt, loose materials and other debris that may be up there in a plastic bag and throw it out. If needed, wash it off.
4. Then, start inspecting the roof. Notice any cracks in it and fill them up with mortar and the trowel. This way, you’ll keep them from getting bigger.
5. The next step is to start priming the area. This will help the sealant grab on to the roof and last longer.
6. Here comes the good part: take the sealant and roller and start covering the whole roof. Make sure to leave a thick layer (and even go over it twice) to completely waterproof the area.
7. You’re basically done! All you have to do now is wait for the roof to dry 100%. As mentioned above, this can take up to 24 hours.
